In today’s competitive market, customer happiness isn’t some fluffy extra — it’s a necessity. But let’s be real: are your products actually making your customers happy, or are they secretly driving them up the wall? Sure, companies face various challenges — budgets, deadlines, and sometimes even a “make-do” attitude. But is compromising on user experience really worth it?
As users ourselves (yes, even you product owners!), we’ve all had those moments where we think, “If only this thing worked this way…” Maybe it’s a phone case that slips out of your hand, or a website that sends you on a wild goose chase. There’s always something missing. While we can’t please everyone all the time, we definitely shouldn’t be giving our users a headache with products that are a pain to use.
As a UX designer, and someone who also thinks about the business side of things, I’m here to tell you why providing a good user experience is not just a nice-to-have — it’s a must-have. Let’s dive into some examples and ideas that you can actually use to make your products better.

Are Simple Tasks Turning into Frustrating Experiences? (Atta Maker Example):
Let’s talk atta makers. These grain grinders are a staple in many Indian households. They’re supposed to make life easier, right? But what if a simple switch turns into a mini-puzzle?
In my house, our atta maker has a switch marked “I” and “O.” Now, these symbols are usually for “on” and “off,” not for switching between different grinding modes. So, when my mother asks me to check if it’s in the right mode, I’m left scratching my head. There’s no indication of what each symbol actually does in this context. It’s confusing, it’s frustrating, and it’s completely unnecessary.
Think about it from a customer’s perspective: they just want to grind some flour. They shouldn’t have to decipher cryptic symbols or guess what each switch position means. This little design flaw can lead to:
The Never-Ending Form:
Every time you do something on this portal, you have to verify with a captcha and OTP. Nothing wrong with that in principle, but when the servers are acting up, you have to enter those things so many times that it starts to feel like part of the form itself.
Anyway, I managed to open the application, and they divided the form into multiple pages: contact, personal details, educational details, etc. So, you fill one page, click “Next,” and it should save and take you to the next page, right? Wrong. Here, you click “Save and Next,” it shows a loading animation, then a pop-up saying the details are saved… and you’re still on the same page.
Seriously, who designed this? After all that effort, it just dumps you back where you started. It was infuriating.
We even looked online for solutions. People suggested clearing browser history, using a specific browser… I mean, come on! The motive behind those tactics was probably to clear the cache, but still. In the end, I had to clear the cache every time I faced a server issue. After two days of struggling, we finally managed to finish the form.
- Wasted Time: Users spend precious minutes trying to figure out the switch instead of getting on with their day.
- Accidental Errors: They might grind the wrong type of grain, potentially affecting the quality of the flour.
- A Bad Taste in Their Mouth (Metaphorically): This seemingly small issue can leave a negative impression of the product and the brand.
A simple label (“Rice,” “Wheat,” etc.) or a small LED indicator would solve this problem instantly. It’s a small investment that can make a big difference in user satisfaction.
Is Your Product Easy to Use for Everyone? (Motorbike Steering Lock):
Now, let’s shift gears (pun intended) to a more complex example: a motorbike steering lock. Imagine borrowing a bike and trying to lock it. Instead of a simple turn of the key, you have to perform a multi-step dance: insert the key, tilt the handlebars just right, push the key in further, rotate it, release the handlebars, and then pull the key out. And if the key doesn’t come out smoothly? Well, you’ll probably end up checking it multiple times and repeating the whole process, hoping for the best.
For regular riders, this might become second nature. But for anyone using the bike occasionally or for the first time, it’s a frustrating experience. They shouldn’t need a manual or a YouTube tutorial just to lock the steering. This complexity translates to:
- A smaller customer base: Casual riders or tourists might be deterred by the complicated locking mechanism.
- Potential security concerns: If a user can’t easily lock the bike, it creates a security vulnerability.
- A negative brand image: This kind of design flaw makes the brand look out of touch with user needs.
A simpler locking mechanism with clear feedback would make the bike more appealing and user-friendly.
Bridging the Physical and Digital Divide (Crompton Website Example):
Even large, established companies can stumble when it comes to user experience, especially when bridging the gap between the physical and digital worlds. My recent experience with Crompton, a well-known appliance and electronics company, perfectly illustrates this point.
I had an issue with two recently purchased Crompton appliances (both the same model), and I decided to use their website to submit a service request. I figured it would be the most efficient way to provide all the necessary details. However, navigating their online service portal quickly became a frustrating ordeal.
After a couple of initial steps, I found myself on a menu where every option — “Request for Service,” “Product Registration,” “Installation Request” — led to the exact same form. This immediately raised a red flag. Was there really no distinction between these different types of requests?
Undeterred, I proceeded to fill out the form. The first hurdle was the “Product No.” field. Now, Crompton helpfully provides a list of suggested model numbers as you type, which is great… except those model numbers all include symbols like slashes and hyphens. But guess what? The input field doesn’t allow you to type those symbols. So, the only way to actually enter the correct model number was to type it somewhere else and then copy-paste it into the form. Talk about an unnecessary extra step!
Then came the “Quantity” field. This is where things got really confusing. I had two identical appliances with the same invoice. Should I submit two separate forms? Would the system even allow me to use the same invoice number twice? What if the service technician only addressed one device and then asked me to submit another request for the second one? The form provided no guidance whatsoever. There were no tooltips, no helpful messages — just a blank field staring back at me. I ended up entering both serial numbers separated by a comma in one field and then putting “2” in the quantity field, hoping for the best.
nd the final blow? After finally filling out the form, including the required CAPTCHA, I clicked “Submit.” And then… nothing. No confirmation message, no loading indicator, just a blank page. I clicked again. This time, a loading overlay appeared, but it just sat there, spinning endlessly. After 15 minutes of waiting and several attempts to resubmit the form, I gave up.
This experience, while seemingly minor, highlights a crucial point: even small usability issues can create significant frustration and negatively impact a customer’s perception of a brand. In Crompton’s case, these digital hurdles could lead to:
- Increased calls to customer support: Frustrated users are more likely to pick up the phone, increasing support costs for the company.
- Negative online reviews: Users might vent their frustration online, damaging Crompton’s reputation.
- Lost sales: In a competitive market, customers might choose a competitor with a more user-friendly online experience.
What Happens When Users Aren’t Happy? The Business Impact:
As these examples illustrate, unhappy customers can have a significant negative impact on your business. They may:
- Abandon purchases: If a product is too difficult or frustrating to use, customers may simply give up and choose a competitor’s offering.

- Increase customer support costs: When products are difficult to use, customers require more assistance from support teams, driving up costs.
- Reduce customer loyalty: Unhappy customers are less likely to become repeat buyers or recommend your products to others.
How Can You Create Products That Delight Users? The Power of User-Friendly Design:
